What is more confusing than being faced with the challenge of students not learning material and not knowing why? Without effective analysis and change, it will continue to be the same: some students “get it” and others simply do not. While there may be a variety of reasons, take a long, hard look at the instructional design of your course. Could that be the problem? Are some of your students being consistently marginalized in your classes? You may not have intended that, but is that what is happening? Compare these two diagrams and ask yourself:
1. Which one is more likely to exclude some students?
2. Which one is more likely to include more students?
