The labor and delivery team at Williamson Medical Center was excited to welcome little Eva Schmitt as the first baby of 2015. Born at9:27 a.m., Eva came into the world weighing just 5 pounds, 6 ounces.
Parents Jarrett and Ryan Schmitt from Franklin had watched some football at a friend's house on New Year's Eve, came home and her water broke aroundmidnight. They packed up and headed to the hospital and were admitted shortly after.
"This is our first baby and since she wasn't due until Jan. 17, we never thought that we would deliver early," Jarrett said. "I have a friend who is pregnant with twins and I thought there was no way I'd go before her, but I did."
She said having the first baby of 2015 didn't really hit her until she saw the big wagon filled with goodies in the lobby just waiting for the first arrival.
"I asked the nurse what that was and she told me it was the prize for the first baby, so I asked if that could be me and she said, ‘maybe!' There was someone else in labor at the same time, but I guess she delivered after me."
The delivering physician was Cynthia Woodall, M.D., with the Vanderbilt Franklin Women's Center.
"Oddly enough, I was on call last year and delivered the first baby last year, too," Woodall said. "I worked New Year's Eve last year and had New Year's Day this year, so I came on at 8 a.m. and the baby wasn't delivered until after I got here. Jarrett is actually my patient, so getting to deliver her baby was kind of a treat for me. She did fabulous and the baby did great as well. It's such a blessing for me to be able to deliver a healthy baby at the beginning of a new year."
Janet Meadows, R.N., director of perinatal nursing and the NICU, said December was one of the busier months on record for WMC's busy labor and delivery floor.
"We delivered approximately 150 babies in December," she said. "We have had several months of delivering upwards of 150 babies in a month, so it's been a busy year for us, but we are looking forward to an even busier year in 2015 as we continue to welcome the newest members of our community."
